Between February 14 and March 14, 2024, the National Museum of History of Moldova will host the photo exhibition with the title "Two years of refuge for children from Ukraine in the heart of Moldova". The exhibition was developed by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to commemorate two years since the start of the war in Ukraine and the refugee crisis in the Republic of Moldova. The gallery includes 68 photos, which were taken by the UNICEF team between February 2022 and January 2024, during support interventions for refugee families in Moldova.
The exhibition reflects the impact of the war on the lives of mothers and children, who had to give up everything they had to save their lives, but also the interventions of UNICEF, developed together with the Government of the Republic of Moldova and other non-governmental partners, to help these families to cope with the consequences of war and to integrate more easily in another country.
The photos outline the solidarity of the population of the Republic of Moldova towards the needs of families in Ukraine, especially at the beginning of the war, and validate the importance of respecting the fundamental rights to protection, education, health and inclusion for every child, wherever they are. The exhibition also aims to highlight the urgent and ongoing need for collective support to ensure the well-being of children in Ukraine, who continue to flee war and are at high risk of abuse, neglect and disruption of education.
Since February 24, 2022, more than 1014000 Ukrainians have crossed the border of the Republic of Moldova. Currently, over 116000 refugees are in the country, of which over 51000 are children and around 43000 are women. Thanks to the consolidated resources of UNICEF, with the financial support of donors, families in Ukraine have access to education, health and protection services.
The photography exhibition will be inaugurated on February 14, 2024 and will be open to the public until March 14, 2024.
