One of the great technical achievements that revolutionized the idea of time and space, opening a new era in the history of communication, is telegraphy. It is based on the transmission of electrical signals through a cable over long distances, allowing people to communicate instantly. The telegraph spread very quickly and a network of wires stretched around the world.

In 1837, the American painter and physicist Samuel Morse invented the first electromagnetic device for telegraphy, patented in 1840. To send messages by wire, Morse developed in 1838 a simple code of dots and dashes, which represented the letters of the alphabet, known as "Morse code ".

Both Morse code and the telegraph machine were improved over time, with the telegraph becoming the most widespread system of communication and information transmission for more than a century, until the advent of the Internet. The telegraph system consisted of a series of stations repeaters along the transmission line route. Each station had an operator who received and transmitted messages by telegraph. The Morse machine transmitted about 25 words per minute, which were recorded in code on a paper tape. The operator in charge of transmitting the message would decode it and write it on paper using a special typewriter.

In Bessarabia, the telegraph entered in 1860: on April 8, the Bender telegraph station began its activity, and on April 24, the one in Chisinau, following the construction of the first Odesa-Chisinau-Leova telegraph line. Currently, telegraph services have been discontinued. The only ones who still use coded communication are radio amateurs.

The Morse telegraph machine shown comes from the Osinoostrovsky electrotechnical plant, Soviet Union, and dates back to 1934. The exhibit was restored by Mihail Culașco.

Opening of the exhibition “Victor Rotaru: Reflections in Colors”

September 21, 2023

On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the opening of the painting exhibition "Victor Rotaru: Reflections in Colors" took place at the National Museum of History of Moldova.

The exhibition tells an unwritten history of the artist Victor Rotaru and aims to familiarize the public with the artist's work, to awaken interest in the discovery and understanding of this personality, whose creations deserve fame, artistic appreciation and admiration. The paintings stand out for their original artistic style and color palette, expressiveness and plasticity of forms. All this gives them a special charm, emotionality, and evokes feelings, which are largely contradictory.

During the presentation of the exhibition, Alexandru Argint, deputy director of the museum, spoke about its main idea, the desire to attract public attention to the artist's creations, through which we can appreciate the talent, skill and courage with which the artist interpreted those times, of Soviet realism, and emphasized the importance of Victor Rotaru's personality for the art and culture of our country. Sergiu Cliucnicov spoke about the man and the artist, about his personal and artistic choices, and that the works of the artist Victor Rotaru deserves to be presented to the public, to be studied and exhibited.

Renowned painters, cultural and artistic figures, and admirers of contemporary art attended the opening. All those present were pleasantly surprised and appreciated the artist's courage, skill and the way he expressed thoughts, accumulating impressions, emotions and experiences, which somehow changed the shadows and penumbras in each painting.

The works of Victor Rotaru inevitably retain the imprint of the difficult times in which he lived, but each of them carries a deep philosophical message that reflects his artistic essence.

The paintings presented in the exhibition are collected and preserved by the Cliucinicov family, and many of the artist's works are exhibited to the public for the first time.

Therefore, this exhibition creates interest and serves as an explanation and inspiration for a deeper understanding of the artist's life and work, and visitors can see works that convey messages filled with memories, emotions and feelings experienced throughout the artist's life.

The painting exhibition "Victor Rotaru: Reflections in Colors" can be visited from September 21 to October 21, 2023 in room no. 1 of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chisinau, 31 August 1989 Street, 121A. We cordially invite all art lovers to make a foray into the world of colors of Victor Rotaru.
