The National Museum of History of Moldova, in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute in Bucharest, is organizing the exhibition "Belgica: A Legendary Expedition" from May 17 to May 31, 2025, marking the 125th anniversary of the return of the Belgica expedition from Antarctica. The opening event will take place as part of the European Night of Museums program.
The Belgica Expedition (1897-1899), led by Adrien de Gerlache, was the first to spend an entire winter in Antarctica. The crew included renowned researchers such as Henryk Arctowski and Antoni Dobrowolski from Poland, Romanian biologist Emil Racoviță, and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. In extreme cold and isolation, they conducted geophysical, meteorological, and biological studies that were fundamental to the understanding of the polar region.
The exhibition consists of five panels illustrating the expedition's course and its impact on subsequent polar research. Each panel corresponds to an episode of the podcast produced by the Polish Cultural Institute in Bucharest.
The "Belgica" podcast provides a complementary perspective on this landmark event in the history of polar exploration, created with the support of @A fost odata (Andra Carbunaru and Mariuca Mihailescu), Oana Paula Popa, Annabella Orosz, and Carla Stefania Duschka.
The exhibition "Belgica: A Legendary Expedition" will be open to visitors between May 17 and May 31, 2025, at the "Clio" Cinematheque of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, 31 August 1989 Street, 121A.
