The National Museum of History of Moldova, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova and the Japan Foundation, is proud to host the international exhibition "Japanese Design Today 100" - an immersive journey into the world of contemporary Japanese design. An exhibition about everyday life and Japanese visual culture.
The exhibition features approximately 100 products, most of which were launched after the year 2000, alongside several masterpieces from earlier decades that illustrate the origins of modern Japanese design. The objects on display span 13 thematic categories, including: furniture, electronics, health, communication, daily life, tableware and cooking, transportation, and architecture.
From tangible consumer goods to intangible systems and services, the exhibition explores how design shapes lifestyles and reflects the transformations of Japanese society. Each item is a testament to the balance between tradition and innovation, between minimalism and functional complexity.
"Japanese Design Today 100" was first launched in 2004 and has been presented in numerous countries over the course of a decade. The current edition is the third, offering an updated perspective on Japanese design with a focus on its relevance in today's global context.
The exhibition is curated by renowned figures in the field of design: Hiroshi Kashiwagi, Masafumi Fukagawa, Taku Satoh (graphic designer), and Yuko Hashimoto (design historian). The exhibition module is designed by TORAFU ARCHITECTS, known for their innovative approaches to museum spaces.
The exhibition "Japanese Design Today 100" will be open to visitors from October 24 to November 23, 2025, in Exhibition Hall No. 4 at the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, 121A 31 August 1989 Street.
