#Exhibit of the Month

The National Bank of Moldova annually issues commemorative or anniversary coins dedicated to various historical events, prominent cultural and scientific figures, the promotion of heritage and cultural traditions, architectural monuments, the flora and fauna of the Republic of Moldova, etc. A significant place in the coin series of the Republic of Moldova is held by those reflecting key milestones in the formation and development of our country. These coins are the subject of this mini-exhibition:

"Light from Light"

April 4th – June 4th, 2017

The exhibition "Light from Light", opened at the Museum of History and Ethnography from Soroca, brings together 23 icons from the collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova devoted to Jesus Christ. The exhibition title symbolizes the period we are about to enter - Easter Holidays. Iconographic compositions shows a comprehensive discourse about the Savior's life from birth to death on the Cross, followed by some fundamental events for the Christian Church - Resurrection and Ascension. The icons are from Bessarabia, Russia, Jerusalem and are dated with the mid-nineteenth century - early twentieth century. Painted in oil and tempera on wood, the icons exhibit different iconographic expressions: from classic style to the influential baroque and naive style.

The exhibition is divided into several distinct compartments with scenes about the infancy of Jesus Christ - birth and His coming to the temple with Mary and Joseph on the 40th day after birth. Then follow images Jesus and the twelve apostles, Jesus blesses children, which reflect the Savior's sermon stage of life. The entry of the Savior in Jerusalem, which is the title of the following icon, marks a new stage of life during the Passions of Christ, shown in the exhibition with scenes of the Last Supper, Jesus before Pilate and Crucifixion of Jesus. The exhibition goes on with two compositions that present the edifying moments of sacrifice of the Savior which became major Christian holy days of Resurrection and Ascension. The last icon in this exhibition recalls the great Pentecost feast when the apostles were blessed with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Marked in the 50th day after the Resurrection, the holy day is also called Cincizecime or Rusalii, which is the last celebration of the paschal cycle.
