#Exhibit of the Month

The National Bank of Moldova annually issues commemorative or anniversary coins dedicated to various historical events, prominent cultural and scientific figures, the promotion of heritage and cultural traditions, architectural monuments, the flora and fauna of the Republic of Moldova, etc. A significant place in the coin series of the Republic of Moldova is held by those reflecting key milestones in the formation and development of our country. These coins are the subject of this mini-exhibition:

„Santa Claus in the world. A journey in pictures”

December 17, 2016 – January 15, 2017

In the upper lobby of the National Museum of History of Moldova was opened to the public an exhibition dedicated to Santa Claus, the most popular character in the world connected to the great holiday of Christmas.

Having the picture as main element, the exhibition follows the transformation of Santa's appearance over time. Representations of this character have changed in time due to the imagination of animators and cartoonists, due to available drawing technique and particularities of time gone.

Rich visual material displayed in the exhibition spins the story line of Santa Claus's image from his first graphical representation in 1686 until the 30's of the 20th century when the "iconic" portrait of the most beloved Old Man is created. More than 80 reproductions of drawings, cartoons and postcards issued in the 19th and 20th centuries in different countries of the world present a friendly old man in a black, green, blue and, finally, red outfit, riding a horse or a donkey, or a reindeer sled, and carrying the Christmas tree or gifts for children worldwide. The story of this character is displayed in 110 authentic pieces from museum heritage and private collections - figurines, tree decorations and Santa Claus illustrations from the 50s - 90s of the 20th century which confer value to the exhibition subject.

The exhibition "Santa Claus in the world. A journey in pictures" will be on public display during winter holidays.
