The Roman bronze situla comes from a collection of archaeological artifacts confiscated at customs and transferred to the holdings of the National Museum of History of Moldova in 2009. Its place of discovery remains unknown.

A situla (Latin for "bucket") is a metal vessel-usually made of bronze-shaped like a pail and equipped with two movable handles at the top, traditionally used for mixing wine with water. The handles are attached to the vessel via two decorated ears that are welded to the rim.

The body of the situla is truncated-conical in shape and features two decorative bands with small circular patterns formed by hammering, located just below the rim.

Its base is double-layered: the inner bottom is hemispherical and hammered, while the outer bottom is flat and lathe-made. The outer base is welded to the inner bottom, serving as the vessel's foot-support.

This object was crafted using a combination of casting, hammering, and partial lathe-finishing. Dimensions: Maximum height - 31.7 cm; Maximum diameter - 22.8 cm; Base diameter - 13.5 cm

Situlae of this type originated in the Roman Empire and were later adopted by various ancient peoples, including those from the northwestern Pontic region.

National scientific conference “STALINIZATION AND DE-STALINIZATION: historical facts, myths, historical memory”

On June 28-29, 2023, the proceedings of the national scientific conference "Stalinization and de-Stalinization: historical facts, myths, historical memory" took place, an event organized by the National Museum of History of Moldova, in cooperation with the Institute of History of the Moldova State University, the National Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism of the Romanian Academy, and the State University "Alecu Russo" from Balti.

The first day of the conference, in a mixed format, brought together researchers from Chisinau, Balti and Bucharest, who presented scientific communications regarding the elucidation of the phenomenon of Stalinism and the process of de-Stalinization from the perspective of historical facts, myths and historical memory.

The second day of the event, in online format, convened representatives of the museographic community from the Republic of Moldova, concerned with putting in value the history and memory of Stalinist deportations and repressions, who presented communications about the projects, initiatives and good practices carried out by museum institutions and memory communities.

The representatives of the young generation from Chisinau and Balti, together with the history teachers and librarians who participated in the works of the scientific and scientific-practical sections, had the opportunity to expand their horizons of historical knowledge and participate in debates on the phenomenon of Stalinism and its consequences on contemporary society.

The event was organized within the project "Edification of a European culture of memory by promoting intergenerational communication and cross-border cooperation. Exchange and implementation of the best practices between Lithuania and Moldova", with the support of the Democracy Promotion and Development Cooperation Program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
