The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the National Museum of History of Moldova, with financial support from the Government of the United Kingdom, announces the opening of the photo exhibition "Caring from the Very First Heartbeat." The exhibition highlights the major transformations in reproductive health services across the Republic of Moldova and their direct impact on the lives of women and newborns.
Since 2022, 12 maternities across the country have been fully modernized and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, significantly increasing birth safety. Today, thousands of babies are born in safe conditions within delivery rooms that meet European standards, while women receive high-quality assistance closer to home.
In parallel, the pre-hospital emergency medical system and maternities have been equipped with 32 modern ambulances (types A, B, and C). these ensure rapid interventions and safe transport in critical cases, including obstetric and neonatal emergencies, even from the most remote localities.
Investments have also focused on supporting survivors of sexual violence. A Network of Support Units for survivors has been established across 11 hospitals nationwide. these units offer gynecological examinations and forensic evidence collection, as well as psychological counseling and integrated support in a safe, confidential, and empathetic environment.
Furthermore, primary healthcare has been strengthened through the modernization of 222 gynecological care offices. These are equipped with modern technology and adjustable gynecological chairs, specifically designed to be accessible for women with disabilities.
Access to cervical screening has also seen significant improvement through the creation of the National Colposcopy Network. This includes 12 colposcopy offices in Chișinău and various districts, all digitally interconnected. This network allows women to benefit from early diagnosis and treatment of precancerous lesions closer to their place of residence.
Each year, approximately 24,000 children are born in the Republic of Moldova. The investments made in recent years contribute directly to reducing maternal and neonatal risks, ensuring a safer start in life for every newborn and greater protection for every mother.
The transformation of the reproductive health system was implemented by UNFPA, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of international partners: Australia, Austria, Denmark, the European Union, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
The photo exhibition "Caring from the Very First Heartbeat" will be open from April to May 2026, displayed on the fence of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, 121 A, 31 August 1989 St.
