The Chișinău Diocesan Girls' School opened its doors on May 3, 1864, addressing a pressing need: in Bessarabia there were no institutions dedicated to the education of clergy's daughters. According to the 1864 circular, teaching was conducted in the Romanian language, a provision applied throughout the diocese. The school's first headmistress was Anastasia Rizo, of noble origin, invited by Archbishop Antonie.

The curriculum, approved by the Ministry of Public Education and the Chișinău Diocese, combined theoretical subjects with practical training. Students studied religion, reading and writing in Romanian, Slavonic, and Russian, arithmetic and exercises in calculation, world history and geography. The program was complemented by church singing and practical skills such as sewing, embroidery, knitting, as well as household management - baking bread and prosphora, preparing meals and preserves, caring for livestock, and cultivating gardens.

The composite, taken in 1911 at the studio of Z. N. Sumovski in Chișinău, depicts 29 graduates and 13 teachers. At the center are portraits of Bishop Serafim (Ciciagov), headmistress N. R. Mihelson, teacher V. E. Bejerian, and priests F. Ghiliarov and P. Jurikas. Among the teaching staff was Paraskovia Vasilievna Cuciurenko, a calligraphy teacher for 37 years, who in 1911 became senior educator and assistant headmistress. For her dedication, she was awarded the gold medal "For Long Service."

On the reverse of the vignette is a label from the store and workshop of frames, paintings, mirrors, and window glass owned by A. D. Kon'gova, Chișinău, Gogol Street no. 37, near the State Bank.

This graduation composite was donated at the end of 2025 to the National Museum of History of Moldova by the Dadiștian family from Drochia.

"Chișinău at the Red Line"

November 8 - December 8, 2024

The National Museum of History of Moldova is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition "Chișinău at the Red Line" on November 8, 2024, at 3:00 PM in Hall 4. The exhibition is organized in partnership with the Association for Culture and Arts Arbor and the Arbor Institute for Culture, with support from ARCUB - the Cultural Center of Bucharest Municipality. It features representative buildings, monuments, and public spaces in Chișinău, mapped from the perspective of the past and present needs, which were showcased in September 2024 at ARCUB in a complex project titled Dear Chișinău.

The project team brings together historians, museum professionals, librarians, archivists, researchers, visual artists, filmmakers, as well as prominent representatives and active members of civil society.

The exhibition offers a captivating insight into the current state of architectural heritage in Chișinău, highlighting the impact of recent events on the city's emblematic buildings. Through a mix of informative texts, collages of historical and recent photographs, objects, placards, artworks, and audio and video recordings, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the conservation process and the transformations of the urban landscape in the capital.

The title "Chișinău at the Red Line" refers to a phrase used by architects in Chișinău, designating buildings constructed along the street alignment, emphasizing the state of the architectural landscape in the lives of its residents. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog containing summary studies on the architecture and history of the discussed buildings, along with information on social context and recent history.

To ensure accurate documentation, discussions were held with members of the scientific community, representatives of public institutions, non-governmental organizations, activists, and individuals passionate about heritage.
The Dragă Chişinău project benefits from the financial support of the Administration of the National Cultural Fund from Romania and the Government of Switzerland, through the Swiss Cooperation Office in the Republic of Moldova.

The exhibition "Chișinău at the Red Line" will be open for visitors until December 8 and provides a profound look into the architectural history and the future of urban heritage in the capital.
