In the context of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the National Museum of History of Moldova, in partnership with the NGO Prietena Mea, hosts the exhibition created within the campaign The Art of Being. The project is presented in several spaces across Chișinău and is built around six individuals with Down syndrome. Through portraits that combine photography and illustration, the campaign speaks about identity and individuality, offering a perspective in which the person is seen beyond the diagnosis.
The Art of Being uses art as a starting point to talk about individuality. People, like works of art, do not follow a single pattern: they have different expressions, rhythms, ways of communicating, and perspectives. In the case of people with Down syndrome, these particularities are often overlooked, while the diagnosis becomes the main lens through which they are perceived.
The campaign seeks to change this perspective. The six protagonists do not illustrate Down syndrome, nor are they presented as examples of a category. Each portrait begins with the person behind the diagnosis - their personality, interests, preferences, and the things that represent them.
The works combine photography with illustrations by Cristina Frei. The illustrated component was developed following conversations with each protagonist about their passions, favorite colors, objects, gestures, and details they identify with. The illustration thus becomes part of the portrait, complementing what photography captures about each individual.
Throughout October, the exhibition will circulate across several spaces in Chișinău: the National Museum of History of Moldova, Moldova State University, Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University, Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Republican Clinical Hospital. The exhibition calendar, with dates for each location, will be published on the communication channels of NGO Prietena Mea.
The campaign The Art of Being is an initiative implemented by NGO Prietena Mea, with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), through IM Swedish Development Partner.
The exhibition The Art of Being can be visited between October 2 - 31, 2026, on the interior railings of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, 31 August 1989 Street, no. 121A.
