On Friday, October 24, 2025, the National Museum of History of Moldova hosted the opening of the international exhibition "Japanese Design Today 100," organized in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova and the Japan Foundation. The event marks a significant moment in promoting Moldovan-Japanese cultural dialogue and international cooperation in contemporary design and creative industries. The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Yoichiro Yamada, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Andrei Chistol, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Ms. Livia Ermurachi, Deputy Director of the National Museum of History, along with representatives of the diplomatic corps, the artistic community, and cultural institutions from across the country. "Japanese Design Today 100" offers an exploration of contemporary Japanese design, bringing together approximately one hundred objects that illustrate the diversity and aesthetic refinement of modern Japan. The exhibited items - ranging from furniture and electronic devices to everyday objects, tableware, health-related products, and transportation - reflect how design shapes daily life and defines the relationship between people, space, and technology.
The selection spans 12 thematic categories and provides a nuanced perspective on concepts such as functionality, simplicity, and visual harmony. Many of the pieces were launched after the year 2000, complemented by a few masterpieces from earlier periods that trace the origins of modern Japanese design. Curated by distinguished experts - Hiroshi Kashiwagi, Masafumi Fukagawa, Taku Satoh (graphic designer), and Yuko Hashimoto (design historian) - the exhibition is presented within a scenographic concept developed by TORAFU ARCHITECTS, renowned for their innovative approaches to contemporary museum spaces. The exhibition "Japanese Design Today 100" is open to visitors from October 24 to November 23, 2025, in Exhibition Hall No. 4 of the National Museum of History of Moldova (31 August 1989 Street, No. 121A, Chișinău).
