International Museum Day 2026

On May 18, 2026, in celebration of International Museum Day, the National Museum of History of Moldova took part in a special event hosted by the National Museum of Art of Moldova, dedicated to honoring excellence in cultural and museum heritage. The gathering brought together representatives from cultural institutions across the entire country, offering a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the dedication and hard work of museum professionals, researchers, conservators, and other specialists in the field.
During the ceremony, Diplomas of Merit were awarded to institutional representatives nationwide as a recognition of their professionalism, responsibility, and active involvement in safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage. Among the honored specialists from both local and national institutions were two distinguished professionals from the National Museum of History of Moldova: Mr. Eugen Mistreanu, Scientific Researcher in the Department of History, Archaeology, and Museology, and Ms. Ana Maria Rusnac, Head of the Heritage Department and Scientific Researcher within the same department.
At the same time, the Museum of History and Ethnography in Mereni, an institution founded in 1980, was awarded the prestigious Trophy of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova in the field of museology. Holding a rich collection of over 10,000 artifacts, this museum actively conducts cultural and educational initiatives dedicated to promoting local heritage and preserving collective memory.
International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18 under the auspices of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This year, the events are held under the theme "Museums that Unite a Divided World," highlighting the crucial role these institutions play in fostering intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, and bringing communities closer together.
