Exhibition Opening “Longing for a Better Past”
October 8, 2026
On October 8, 2026, in Hall 4 of the National Museum of History of Moldova, the international exhibition "Tânjind după un trecut mai bun / Longing for a Better Past" was inaugurated. The event was opened by Mr. Alexandru Argint, General Director of MNIM, followed by interventions from curators Andreea Căpitănescu and Olivia Nițiș, as well as artist Ghenadie Popescu, who presented the concept and central messages of the project.
"When you deconstruct a history, you build another, imperfect one" - this idea lies at the heart of the exhibition, which addresses political nostalgia for the socialist past as the result of contradictions. It is not a longing for socialism itself, but for the coherence it promised and which the present cannot provide.
The exhibition does not display the past as it was, but rather the mechanisms through which it is remembered and reconstructed to make the present bearable. The works of artists from Romania and the Republic of Moldova become instruments of research and knowledge, navigating through micro-histories, personal archives, and materials reflecting a lost era. They highlight subjective memories and embrace the non-linear condition of history, questioning the paradox of nostalgia - the desire to recover a contradictory past.
The exhibition brings together artists from Romania and Moldova - Matei Bejenaru, Tatiana Fiodorova-Lefter, Mălina Ionescu, Mălina Moncea, Sarah Muscalu, Delia Popa, Ghenadie Popescu, Marilena Preda Sânc, Carmen Raszovsky, Gheorghe Raszovsky, Renée Renard - in a transgenerational framework of reflection on the memory of communism and the ways in which the past is re-signified through art. Their works intersect spatial memory, nostalgic dissent, incomplete mourning, and reflective nostalgia as the memory of a potential future - imagined projects that never materialized.
"Longing for a Better Past"is a reflection on the ways in which the archive contradicts memory and vice versa, and on how artistic fiction intervenes to re-signify and fill the gaps of history. The exhibition thus becomes a critical space of dialogue between memory and history, between past and present, between promises and realities.
The exhibition can be visited between October 8 - November 22, 2026, in Hall 4 of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, str. 31 August 1989, 121A.Producer: WASP Studios (Bucharest) Partners: tranzit.org/ Iași; National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău; National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, Bucharest Sponsor: AQUA Carpatica Cultural project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund
